About the project

Advisable is a search engine that helps people across the US find the right financial advisor — for financial planning, portfolio management, and other financial services. It replaced word-of-mouth referrals and disconnected directories with a fast, modern search experience built on open data sources.

Users can search by advisor type, location, or registration number, then filter by assets under management, fee structure, and services offered to find an advisor that fits their needs. The platform's database is refreshed daily with newly registered advisors, pulled and processed from open data sources. What started as a search and filtering tool was built with speed and ease of use as the top priorities, designed to stand out from existing advisor directories through a cleaner, faster experience.

Problem

Advisable needed to give people across the US a fast, reliable way to find the right financial advisor—without relying on word-of-mouth referrals or sifting through outdated, disconnected directories.

Before Advisable existed, people looking for a financial advisor faced significant challenges:

Fragmented research process. 
There was no centralized way to discover, compare, and filter financial advisors by what actually mattered—assets under management, fee structure, or services offered.
Outdated, static directories. 
Existing directories relied on infrequently updated data, making it hard to know if an advisor's information—or even their registration status—was current.
No way to compare on the criteria that matter. 
Investors had no easy way to filter advisors by fee structure (AUM-based, hourly, subscription, flat fee) or compare services side by side before reaching out.
Slow, cluttered experience. 
Existing advisor-search tools were often slow and outdated, making a simple search feel more complicated than it needed to be.

Our process

We partnered with Advisable to build a marketplace where anyone in the US could find an adviser for financial planning, portfolio management, and related financial services, following our proven Product Ladder model.

STEP `01`

MVP: validated the product with a focused first version

The team started with a roadmap focused on time to market and extensibility, then designed a seamless user flow and a slick, modern interface. We integrated with open data sources to power the platform's search capabilities, built an architecture for daily database updates, and optimized performance for faster search — resulting in an easy-to-use interface with filters that let users quickly find the right adviser.

STEP `02`

Dedicated product team: get a stable team that owns product delivery

We embedded a dedicated team — product manager, UX/UI designer, backend and frontend engineers — to own the product end-to-end. This delivered new features for the application without the handoffs of rotating contractors.

Marketplace platform for advisers and investors

The platform helps anyone in the US find an adviser for financial planning, portfolio management, and related financial services — matching users with the right professional through an easy-to-use interface with search filters. Built with React, Material UI, and Redux, the product delivers the modern, fast experience users expect from a search engine, backed by data from open sources on registered advisers.

Backend & infrastructure

The backend integrates with open data sources on financial advisers and processes that data through an architecture supporting daily database updates, keeping search results current as new advisers register. Built on a Spring Boot and Hibernate foundation with PostgreSQL and AWS-based infrastructure (Elastic Beanstalk, RDS, S3), the system was optimized for fast, reliable search performance.

Results

Advisable turned the scattered process of finding a financial adviser into a simple, focused search experience for anyone in the US looking for financial planning, portfolio management, or related services.

By integrating open data sources on registered advisers and optimizing the platform for search speed, Advisable replaced manual, time-consuming research with a fast, filterable interface that surfaces the right adviser in moments. The daily-updating database ensures new advisers are reflected as soon as they register, keeping results current without manual maintenance. The result is a clean, modern marketplace that meets what users expect from a search engine — competing with established players on both design and speed.
